So, what’s the job?

We’re on the hunt for a School Meals Worker - a reliable, organised person who can keep things running like clockwork in a busy secondary school.

You’ll be based in a secondary school, working Monday to Friday during the school term.

You will be the smiley face representing Fresh Today in the school. Your duties will consist of cooking, heating meals and serving them to students. You’ll be responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the school canteen and providing the service that reflects Fresh Today and the requirements of the school.

You’ll be responsible for everything that happens within your unit, including ordering stock, ensuring the dietary needs of the school community are met, providing a wide variety of food each day and rotating food options to ensure students have a varied menu. You’ll also oversee the cleanliness of the kitchen and report to the Area Manager.

If you’re a detail addict and thought this was a little vague, here’s a list for you:

• Prepare and heat meals to the correct temperatures according to HACCP guidelines.

• Display the meals in the canteen for the students to serve themselves.

• Ensure adequate stock levels.

• Place all required orders using a laptop.

• Ensure the dietary needs of the school community are met.

• Ensure a wide variety of food is available and food options are rotated to provide students with a varied menu.

• Follow and maintain work and cleaning schedules.

• Maintain temperature and cleaning records.

• Keep the kitchen and food preparation areas clean and organised.

• HACCP Level 3, Manual Handling, Slips Trips & Falls, Allergen Awareness, Handling Chemicals and Tusla Training will be provided before you start work.

• Ensure all required records are maintained and available for Environmental Health Officer inspections.

• Garda Vetting must be completed before you can begin working within the school.

What we’re looking for

Since you’ll be representing Fresh Today, trading as NanMul in schools, we’re looking for doers - people who are sound, good-natured, and genuinely care about doing a good job. Our values matter to us, and to keep improving the lives of teenagers across the country, we need people who share that same goal.

You’ll need to be a quick learner, great with people, comfortable working independently, and happy to go with the flow.

We’re not asking for bodybuilders, but you do need to be able to lift 14kg boxes as part of the job. You may also need to climb some stairs – not every school in Ireland has a lift (just yet)!

We’re looking for someone who can work quickly, stay calm under pressure, and still do things properly.

Having experience handling food is essential for this role. Experience working with children is a bonus, but not required. We value people from all backgrounds and will provide full training to help you succeed.

All you need is the ability to read English, follow instructions, and heat each lunch with care.

• What hours will I be working?

You’ll work Monday to Friday during the school term, on average 35 hours per week for 40 weeks. You’ll generally start your day between 7:00am and 8:00am and finish between 2:00pm and 3:00pm, depending on the needs of your school. Occasionally, if there is an evening function at the school, your services may also be required.

• Will I have to work all year long?

No! As schools close for the summer, we follow the academic calendar. As a result, you will work with us approx 165 days of the year and will have the rest off to enjoy some well-deserved rest! You will work from the first week in September to the Friday before the June Bank Holiday each year, with school holidays throughout the year.

• How much is it paid?

It’s THE question everybody is asking! The same way we take care of the students in the schools, we take care of our people. You will earn €14.65 per hour.

As you are available to work but no work will be available during the summer period, you may be entitled to social payments for the 12 weeks of the summer.
